Former Vice-president of the Senate Lyndira Ouditt has formally resigned her post and pledged her allegiance to the Austin Jack Warner led Independent Labour Party now Warner is calling on Tunapuna Member of Parliament and the former leader of the Congress of the People Winston Dookeran to join forces with him.
Addressing hundreds of supporters at Auzonville Park, Tunapuna on Saturday night, Warner said Dookeran has lost his way. “Winston will you help me,” asked Warner. He also advised Dookeran “don’t fly so much.”
Warner alluded to Oropouche East MP Minister of Housing Dr Roodal Moonilal acting on his (Dookeran’s) behalf when he was out of the country. “Clip your wings. Stay on the ground and let us fight together.” The inclement weather did not daunt the spirit of supporters who were clad in all shades of green, and Warner said he was the hope of the people.
He said it was up to the ILP to give back the hope that was misplaced, and called on the people to vote out the present Government. Warner said service to country was more important than service to self. He said it was a lifelong vocation. Referring to the Chaguanas West bye-election, Warner said it revealed a diminished trust in the Government. He said the people were no longer willing to accept “the vulgarity of party politics.”
Although he clearly won the bye-election against the strongest candidate, the United National Congress’ Khadijah Ameen, Warner still continued to pinpoint what he deemed as her shortcomings. He said the Tunapuna Piarco Regional Corporation which chaired was responsible for many services such as homes for the elderly, bus and taxi services and management of clean markets and abattoirs. “For the last three years this corporation did not deliver and now they want an extra year to perpetuate these atrocities. Under PNM the service was poor but under the chairmanship of Ameen, the service that was promised was never delivered. The people of this corporation deserve better.”
With the end of the term of councillors on regional corporations on July 27, Warner told the audience “don’t call UNC cabal, UNC councillors.” He questioned who were the councillors Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar was referring to when she said some of them asked for the Local Government Elections to be postponed. Warner said there were no councillors.
Commenting on the selection of candidates for the upcoming Local Government elections, Warner said closeness to the political leader was not necessary, to be an ILP candidate or investment in the party and race.
